The cyclonic storm Montha has weakened into a deep depression over coastal Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring Telangana on Wednesday. It is likely to move north to northwestwards towards south Chhattisgarh and further weaken into a depression, the Meterological Department said.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast very heavy rainfall along coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Rayalaseema, Vidarbha, Marathwada on Wednesday, and in Bihar, Saurashtra, and Kutch till October 31. Very heavy showers are also likely in sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Friday.
Two killed in Andhra Pradesh
In Andhra Pradesh, Cyclone Montha wreaked havoc, killing two people and damaging standing crop over 1.5 lakh acres and disrupting power and transportation. State Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who undertook an aerial survey of the cyclone-hit areas of Bapatla, Palnadu, Krishna, Konaseema and Eluru, said: “Whatever extensive damage occurred because of this (cyclone). This is a major calamity to the state. However, we managed to save a bit. We brought 1.8 lakh people into relief camps. I came to see how the camps are,” he said.

“We turned off power in emergency situations and revived immediately,” said the CM, adding that except for four sub-stations, all others received power.
According to the CM, paddy and horticultural crops suffered damage. Naidu also visited a relief camp at Odalarevu village of Allavaram mandal in Konaseema district, and distributed essential supplies to evacuees, which included 25 kg rice and other items and an amount of Rs 3,000 cash per family.
Landslides, trees uprooted in Odisha
Meanwhile, several incidents of landslides, uprooting of trees, and damage to houses were reported in various districts in Odisha. The maximum of 105 mm rainfall has been recorded in Mayurbhanj district, followed by 93.5 mm in Balasore, 90 mm in Khurda and 74.4 mm in Chandbali, the bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Centre (IMD) said. Light-to-moderate rain with wind speed ranging from 30 kmph to 40 kmph was recorded across the coastal belt, including Khurda, Cuttack, Puri, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur districts, in the state, the weather department said.
Telangana on alert
In neighbouring Telangana, following heavy rains, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy cautioned the administration to remain on high alert and ordered special arrangements at paddy and cotton procurement centres. after reviewing the cyclone’s impact. Heavy rains lashed different districts of Telangana leading to diversion and halt of trains, including Golconda Express and Konark Express, at Dornakal Junction in Mahabubabad district and Gundratimadugu station.
